Receiving Your Dentures

At first, Dr. Bhatia may recommend you wear your denture all the time. Although this may be temporarily uncomfortable, it’s the quickest way for you to adjust to your new denture and determine if any final adjustments need to be made. For the first few weeks, a new denture may feel awkward or bulky. However, your mouth will eventually become accustomed to wearing it.
Dr. Bhatia may want you to wear your dentures while you sleep so that your gums can adjust to your new smile. After the first few days, it’s recommended that you avoid sleeping with your dentures to give your gums a rest and to prevent pneumonia. Sleeping with dentures may cause harmful bacteria to enter the lungs which may lead to pneumonia.
For the first few weeks, it may take a little practice to pronounce certain words. Reading out loud and repeating troublesome words will help. If your dentures “click” while you’re talking, speak more slowly. You may find that your dentures occasionally slip when you laugh, cough or smile. Reposition the dentures by gently biting down and swallowing.
